During National Library Week, Laredo ISD proudly named Maritza Molina, librarian at Zachry Elementary School, as its 2024-2025 Librarian of the Year. Molina was honored for her extraordinary dedication, creativity, and leadership in creating a campus culture where reading is encouraged and celebrated like the main act under a big top.

The announcement was made during a special recognition luncheon held in honor of all district librarians and library assistants. The event was part of the district’s weeklong celebration of National Library Week. It featured an official proclamation from City of Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño, declaring March 31–April 4 as National Library Week in Laredo and Webb County. LISD Board President Juan Ramirez, Jr. and Superintendent Dr. Sylvia Rios also addressed the audience with words of appreciation. Each librarian and librarian assistant was recognized with a token of appreciation on behalf of the district, honoring their vital role in student achievement.

But the spotlight shines bright on Molina, whose work at Zachry Elementary has reimagined what a library can be. Known for transforming her space into a vibrant, welcoming hub of literacy and leadership, Molina leads with heart, purpose, and imagination. From carefully curating diverse reading collections to fostering student voice through the Library Club, National Honor Society, and Library Extended Day, she has cultivated a strong reading culture and empowered students beyond the classroom.

One standout initiative is her virtual read-aloud collaboration with Cigarroa High School librarian P Sosa, which brought former Zachry students back (virtually) to read to current students. The event was celebrated by the LISD Board and reflected Molina’s belief in connecting generations through literacy.

“It is with great pride that I nominate Maritza Molina for Librarian of the Year in recognition of her unwavering dedication, leadership, and passion for literacy and education. As the librarian at Zachry Elementary School, Ms. Molina consistently goes above and beyond in serving our students, staff, and community. She is not just a librarian; she is an educator, mentor, advocate, and role model who has transformed our library into a vibrant hub of learning, collaboration, and inspiration,” said Zachry Elementary Principal Lilia Mora.

Molina’s impact extends beyond the walls of the library. She volunteers at every school event, coordinates the Student of the Month program, and leads the campus Social Club, building strong staff morale and student recognition. Her efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. She’s the proud recipient of LISD’s “Inspiring Change” award, “Leading with Heart” recognition, and the Golden Apple Award.

Mely Paez, LISD Director of Library and Media Services, described Molina as “the heart and soul of what a librarian should be,” adding, “Her creativity in programming, her ability to inspire readers, and her leadership in both school and community initiatives make her a true star in our district. She brings books to life and empowers every student to believe in the magic of learning.”

Reflecting on the award, Molina expressed that she is truly honored and grateful for the recognition. “As a librarian, my mission is to inspire a love for reading, knowing that research shows children who read at least 20 minutes a day develop stronger vocabularies, perform better in school, and build essential critical thinking skills. Reading not only enhances academic success but also fosters creativity, empathy, and a lifelong passion for learning. I am proud to play a role in helping students discover the power of books and the endless possibilities they unlock. I want to thank my principal Mrs. Lilia Mora for the nomination and Mrs. Paez for her unconditional support to our libraries.”

With applause, smiles, and plenty of books to go around, LISD kicked off National Library Week in circus-worthy style—celebrating not only a star librarian but an entire team of passionate professionals who keep the magic of reading alive across every campus.
