On August 10, 1973, Herring-Price
Lumber Company, a division of H. B. Zachry Company, offered the Laredo
Independent School District a thirty-acre building site in south Laredo,
on condition that an elementary school be constructed for the children
in this area, to be followed at a later date by other educational
facilities.
H. B. Zachry Elementary School represents the fulfillment of many dreams and much planning by representatives of
H. B. Zachry Company and the LISD staff, and made into reality by the
generous offer Mr. Zachry made. After due deliberation, the Board of
Trustees of LISD felt it fitting that this school bear the name of a man
who has made so many contributions to his first home, Laredo. At the
regular meeting of April 15, 1976, it was so ordered by unanimous vote.
H. B. Zachry’s visions and contributions to this community have been
numerous, and the many children who are served here shall remember his
name. Recently, the members of our School Board and our former
Superintendent Dr. Paul Cruz have allowed us the opportunity to expand
our facilities for the betterment of our community and our students.
That is why today we have a new library, gym, science lab, music room,
and art room. We are glad that many students will enjoy these facilities
for years to come.
